Redwood Hill Farm ~ Capracopia
At the original Redwood Hill Farm, we celebrate dairy goats and farm life while producing quality, artisan products using the Capracopia label. Capracopia is a combination of two words: first Capra which is the genus of mammals comprised of goats, and Copia which is part of the word Cornucopia. We’ve all seen the curved basket with abundance spilling out. That curved basket is reputed to have originally been a goat horn! Therefore Capracopia references goats, the stars of the farm, and our diverse farm products are the abundance spilling out of “the horn of plenty”.
Located in the town of Sebastopol in Sonoma County, our farm is nestled among the picturesque redwood trees of the northern California coast and is about 60 miles north of San Francisco. GO HERE to find out more about farm life on our blog page.
Dairy goats are the primary focus at our diversified family farm.
We are proud to supply our Grade A goat milk to Mt. Eitan Cheese, a Sonoma County based artisan creamery where they hand craft a variety of cheese styles, all delicious. Omer Seltzer, Mt. Eitan owner and cheese maker, was born into goat farming and cheese making on the family farm in the Judean Mountains. At the farm his father started making artisan cheese in the late 1970s, following the tradition and knowledge shared by French and Greek Orthodox monks living in a nearby monastery. Omer learned the art of cheese making at a young age, apprenticed in Provence, France; and continued his professional development in California. You can find Mt. Eitan cheese here at the farm during our farm tours, the Sebastopol Farmer’s Market, and other fine markets and restaurants.
Environmental sustainability has always been a farm priority. Our dairy, barns and two homes are powered by solar energy. In addition, we have installed rainwater catchment tanks that can collect and store 100,000 gallons of rainwater for irrigation and water conservation. The goat manure is composted and used for our growing crops and gardens. We believe in quality animal welfare and are proud to have been the first goat dairy in the United States to be Certified Humane® in 2005.
